Your Skin Barrier, Explained Simply

The invisible shield that decides whether your skin feels calm or chaotic — and how to keep it happy.

Think of your skin barrier as a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, and lipids — ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids — are the mortar holding everything together. When the wall is intact, moisture stays in and irritants stay out.

Signs your barrier needs support

  • Skin stings when you apply basic products
  • Tightness right after cleansing
  • Flakiness alongside oiliness
  • New, unexplained sensitivity

The most common causes are over-cleansing, over-exfoliating and stacking too many actives at once. The fix is usually less, not more: a gentle cleanser, a ceramide-rich moisturizer, and patience for two to four weeks.
